Yield Sign

A: Yield right of way signs are triangular and have a red border on a white background. A yield sign means you must reduce speed when approaching an intersection. Give right of way and stop if necessary if any other traffic is in, or closely approaching, the intersection.

A: You often find yield signs when merging into a traffic circle or onto an interstate or highway. The sign looks like an upside-down red pyramid with another white pyramid in the center with the word “yield.” When yield signs were originally introduced, they were yellow. The government later changed the color to red.

A: The yield sign is a regulatory sign. According to the rules, when you see a yield sign, you should drive slowly, below five mph, to see if there is any other traffic crossing. Seeing the yield sign, the driver must slow down and yield their right to other vehicles and pedestrians approaching from different directions.

A: Paradoxically, the statute does not require drivers to yield at yellow lights — as most drivers learn in driver's education courses. Instead, a yellow light is simply a warning to drivers that the light will turn red and they will soon need to yield the right-of-way.

A: Combined with its red background, the unique shape makes it easily recognizable even at great distances. An upside-down triangle road sign always means “yield.” Diamond-shaped road signs always warn of possible hazards ahead.

A: It blends in enough to be considered part of the scenery, but sticks out enough to notice when you need it. The white typeface on those green signs is the perfect contrast for night driving. In fact, that color combination actually makes the letters appear larger and easier to read.
